World first Manta Ray Birth

The Churaumi aquarium on Okinawa is the first in the world to breed the giant manta ray. Worth mentioning is that the youngster was also conceived there, so no pregnant-female-importing crap (hate considering that world first captive birth).

suppose to be some footage on youtube somewhere... this is the news article anyways

What a Blow for the aquarium. At least they'll know what to do next time. They are also planning to breed whale sharks.

There is a film on Youtube

A second Manta Ray was born June 17. For safty reasons, it was immediatley transfered to a large sea pen 2 km outside of the Aquarium.

Great to hear that the aquarium did the right thing this time. How big are they when they're born?

According to the aquarium, the newborn manta was more than six feet wide.

The mother manta, which was brought to the aquarium in 1998 after hitting a fishnet off the southern island of Okinawa, about 1,000 miles southwest of Tokyo, mated with its partner on June 8, 2006, and was pregnant with the baby for 374 days, according to the statement.
from the article....
