chameleons - help wanted
Old 18-03-2008

Hi everyone,
If you have time could you take a look at my website drmidas.co.uk and check out my two chameleon pictures which I need to label (Click on meet the animals). I think one may be the parson's but I'm not sure. Also if anyone can give me any help with my list of where to see Madagascar animals in the UK it would be appreciated - chameleons and geckos in particular. I'm hoping to go to Manchester Museum this Easter to take pics of the frogs and geckos there - does anyone know what species they have in the vivarium?
Also any sifaka fans might like to check out the Madagascar news section - any other related news pieces always welcomed too.
Thanks
Susan

I can't help with the chameleons I'm afraid. There used to be one at Manchester Museum, but it wasn't there last Sunday. The only Malagasy species that I didn't photograph was the False Tomato Frog (which were too well hidden).

Thanks for that fellow lemur fan! I loved your pictures by the way, I'll let you know if I lure the tomato frogs out.

Chameleons are Parson's at Lakeland and Meller's at Bristol.

Definitely Chamaeleo parsoni (1st) and Chamaeleo melleri (2nd).

Anyone else been to Madagascar here? Magical island with an unique flora and fauna! A true Darwin's evolutionary garden.

That's great, thanks I'll try and update my captions tonight. Anyone come up with any places to see them in zoos yet?

Yes, according to ISIS they do.

Susan, have you been to Zurich? They have a HUGE madagascan house (Which I'm sure that you already aware about)

Also, Walsrode has some very rare madagascan birds.

Oh a tenrec close to home! I'll have to go the palms - I've been before but don't remember that being among the exhibits. I've also heard since my visit to Leeds Tropical World that they have tenrecs there - but I definitely didn't see any sign of any - or the ring-tails for that matter. I'm sure these Madagascan animals are hiding from me because I want to take their picture! I went to West Midlands safari park at the weekend and the aye-aye would not show itself. (Fortunately I have seen them being very active at Paris and Bristol - I'm still trying to work out an easy and cheap way to get to Edinburgh and hoping to get to Jersey for my mum's 60th this summer - flights seem good value but accomodation is a bit of a nightmare.) Anyone know if they have one or a pair (at WMSP)and when the best chance to see it is - I have a free return visit ticket to use before November if my car lasts that long! Ha.
At WMSP I saw giant day gecko, leopard skin gecko and what I think was a nile crocodile (that reptile house labelling is crazy - I wanted to see all the creatures on the pictures! and the giant jumping rats oh and hissing cockroaches - I think every zoo has them! Their guide said they have emperor scorpions which I believe are Madagascan - in the discovery centre it was imperial ones - is it the same thing?
I have also heard about the cool Madagascar exhibit at Zurich and would love to see it - hopefully I might head that way next year - I'm also day- dreaming a lot about a trip to Bronx Zoo! Any details on the birds at Walsrode? I look forward to your help Bongorob!
You've all been a big help - at the moment I've kept my list limited to the UK - but I will extend it. This little website project has grown into a bit of a monster - when I really should be working on writing at the moment - lol!

At walsrode, I believe they have:

Giant coua
Crested Coua
Blue coua
Sickle billed vanga
Madagascan ibis

I saw the aye aye at Jersey without any problem at all, and they were just on my way around the zoo.

When I visited Jersey in 2005 they had a pair of aye-aye (and I believe the individual at WMSP is the offspring of this pair). We visited the aye-aye enclosure at approx. 3 PM and saw them both. It is a similar enclosure to the one at WMSP (also share with giant jumping rats). If you visit Jersey, there are plenty of B&B's a short distance from the zoo...

WMSP does have nile crocodiles and even though their signs are quite odd, I do like their reptile collection and house. Imperial scorpions are the same as Emporer, I believe, but it may need checking.
