Snowleopard - you must have a very understanding wife if you managed 15 zoos in 6 weeks on your honeymoon! My family know me well enough to ask whenever I have booked a holiday which zoos are going to be involved, but I'm afraid more than two per week wouldn't be tolerated! They are all pretty enthusiastic though, even if they are not "enthusiasts", they can all name all the species of rhino, can identify creatures such as aye-ayes and bilbies, and my youngest son favourite animal is the okapi.

Pygathrix, My brother is just the same. He'll complain continuously, but when he gets there he'll be excitedabout seeing the baby tapirs or Manatees. He can name lots of species, like all four tapirs and he knows more about manatees than me!!
My Mum will be happy to go along to most zoos because she likes orangs and plants. Chester is perfect from her point of view!
My Dad likes animals, but loves photography, so will always take his camera along and thats where I get most of my pictures from.

Pygathrix, Which is better San diego zoo or the WAP?

I'm a bird fan, but when I went to San diego zoo I missed out o a lot of these species so I NEED to go back!

I went to both about 16 years ago, pre-pandas, and the californian condors were not then on show

I suppose that I had always imagined the zoo was the best in the world so it was a bit of an anti-climax. Overall I think I enjoyed the zoo more as it had such a concentration of rare and unusual animals. At that time the zoo had lots of "mesas" and "grottos" which aren't the most attractive way of exhibiting, but I get the impression that it's a lot more immersion than that now. The WAP is huge, but was much better than UK safari parks. The fantastic climate really gives you the impression that you are looking at an actual savannah (not that I have ever seen the real thing)

Sun Wukong -
A pedant writes: the zoo is in the west half of the city, the tierpark in the east. The first two times I went there was a big wall between them! Not any more I know. Which half do you live in?

Western Plains Zoo is actually east of most of Australia - do you think it should be renamed? (just kidding)

I am amazed and incredibly impressed by some of the lists on here...

One of the reasons I'm so happy to have found this site is that I get constant **** about my love of zoo's at work, (maybe the Police is not the place to be a zoo geek..!) but by seeing the knowledge (of zoo's) and dedication (by the amount of money spent) to visit them by all of you, I realise I have a lot to learn and have found some kindred spirits...

Anyway my (brief) list:

New Zealand:

Auckland Zoo
Lion Man Park
Hamilton Zoo
Rainbow Springs
Marineland
National Aquarium
Wellington Zoo

Australia:

Melbourne Zoo
Melbourne Aquarium
Werribee Open Range
Sydney Aquarium
Sydney Wildlife World
Taronga Zoo
Manly Aquarium
Western Plains Zoo
Australia Zoo
Mooloolaba Aquarium
Dream World (I don't really coun't this)

Well that's my list...

I think I have Zoo envy...

@Pygathrix: Neither, at the moment.. But believe it or not: I still meet people not knowing that the seperation is no longer...and I'm not talking about amnesia here.
