Los Angeles Zoo & Botanical Gardens Animal News

In this thread I will inform everyone of new animals and births.

 

Well, in the past couple of months the LA zoo has had 2 Desert Bighorn Sheep born and 3 Turkomen Markhors. The zoo also had a Red-flanked Duiker, and a Red River Hog, both of them were sent to the nursery because the mothers did not take care of them. In March, the zoo had the birth of the critically endangered Peninsular Pronghorn.

For the future, the Taronga zoo will be sending 1.1 koalas in a breeding loan and the zoo will also acquire a 1.0 Maned Wolf from another zoo in the US (not sure where), also on a breeding loan.

Are bush pigs being phased out by the pig & peccary TAG?

 

The LA zoo will be getting the giant otters from the Cali Zoo in Cali, Colombia for the new Rainforest of the Americas that will open in 2010.

 

I'm not sure if the bush pigs, AKA red river hogs, are being phased out because the LA zoo keeps breeding them.

 

whoa, hold on, red river hogs or bush pigs? They are NOT the same animal. Potamochoerus porcus and potamochoerus larvatus respectively.

 

The only zoo outside of africa with bush pigs is San Diego Zoo. The pig and peccari TAG is still looking for new holders of warty pigs and chaco peccari, they ask also european zoos, but a few of them are keeping another subspecies of the warty pigs and I don't know if there is a european zoo interested in chaco peccari.

I think the zoo meant Red River Hogs, not Bush Pigs. I just copied what the zoo had on the list, so it's not my fault.

 

Oh, and I fergot to mention that another Crested Capuchin Monkey was born. I'm not sure of the gender or when it was born, but I think it's 1-2 weeks old.

 

I'm not blaming you, I just wanted to clarify. I knew San Diego has(had?) bush pigs and I know they've been prolific there, just wasn't sure if they'd been dispersed to other zoos yet.

It would certainly be red river hogs on the move. (I was under the impression that San Diego's bush pigs were actually not breeding as well as hoped; only recently have they had any breeding success).

What I find most interesting in the mountain tapir moving to Cologne; this will be the first mountain tapir in Europe for over a decade. I guess they figure that with so many other (related) males in North America, they can afford to lose one!

 

That's true, specially at the LA zoo since they have 4.1 tapirs.

 

are the any animal pregnancies right now?

 

As of right now I'm not sure, but I've heard that the snow leopard, sumatran tiger, and a grevy's zebra might be pregnant. This is not definite, this is all what I've heard. Also a while back there were some rumors that one of the orangutans might be pregnant, but I haven't heard anything for a couple of months.

 

Four (1.3) Rock Hyrax went on exhibit this past weekend in the weaver birds exhibit.
