i want this forum to remain friendly to newcomers ive decided, even if the chimpanzees would probably be smarter than their would-be keeper.
jokes man
ok, these are the zoos in Australia with Chimpanzee....
Taronga Zoo-actively breeding colony, internationally acclaimed management practices and exhibit, strong links with in-situ conservation.
group stands at 19 individuals, following 4 recent births. Taronga has some of the oldest zoo chimps in the world.

Zoos South Australia-Monarto Zoo is developing a new exhibit for this species to open soon; the largest of any zoo in Australia. Adelaide Zoo will relocate its aged animals there-more animals are coming from New Zealand and the group will hopefully integrate.

Mogo Zoo-father and daughter chimpanzee originally from New Zealand. Zoo caught in a funding shortfall. Chimps meant for Mogo now going to Monarto (I think)

Rockhampton Zoo-two brothers.

New Zealand......
Wellington Zoo, actively breeding. Share bloodlines with Taronga group.
Hamilton Zoo. Troop relocated to purpose-built enclosure from AucklandZoo in 2002/03??

Now you just have to choose a house. If you are so interested in knowing about the status of these animals in Australian Zoos why dont you go to www.isis.org and look at the numbers? or better still, do what we all do and read through the old posts and gather info that way.

According to ISIS Adelaide has 1 male 2 females; Mogo has 1 male 1 female; and Taronga has 7 males and 11 females.

thats right.
the two animals at Mogo Zoo are from a place called Willowbank. They are father and daughter, and she needs contraception to prevent a pregnancy. Mogo reckons they could hold up to 4 animals but this looks unlikely.
Wellington Zoo will hold up to 14 animals in the future, and Hamilton Zoo up to 16.
Dreamworld have also put their hands up to keep this species, after 2010, planning for 3:10.
In the meantime Monarto Zoo is the priority.

Is Monorata an actual zoo or is it just a type of walk in sanctuary which you pay for?

actually glyn, since we seem to enjoy memorising a wealth of otherwise useless zoo information....

mogo zoos chimps do not come from willowbank. in fact willowbank still have their chimps. mogo zoos chimps are male/female siblings and come from brenton bullen - who incidentally thought he could kept them in a shipping crete.

the plan was for mogo to acquire and integrate the willowbank chimps to form a group when the enclosure is finished. whenever that happens, they probably be expanding their white lion facilities before then!

I didn't think Willowbank's chimps had gone, but then I haven't been there for a while.
