i've been quietly expecting this for some time.... though the supprise comes in that it was adelaide and not melbourne or taronga zoos. bigger profile zoos (especially taronga) in bigger cities with more international and domestic tourists.

the silly thing is, if they are still commanding the $10 million price tag - i'm guessing these animals will gobble up an aweful lot of money and resources from adelaide zoo that could have otherwise be better spent on program species in the region.

the big question is - will it boost tourism to adelaide so much that they pay their way?

Looking forward to hear from the usual suspects about how this is not true and how it is against the ARAZPA regional plans.

P.S. I am just **** stirring, I usually agree with what some of the more level headed forum members have to say on such topics and I do want to hear their opinion on this. For what it is worth I would like to see pandas in Australia somewhere and I think Adelaide Zoo would be a good host.
It doesn't mention in the article if the pandas come with their usual million dollar price tag. A lot of money over ten years.

I thought Currumbin was the place to get the pandas, does this mean that there will be two pairs in Australia?

they chinese aint being nice, our govt is still paying the 1.5 mill for them each year, on top of the enclosure construction

zoo-wise, not a good move, but it's not adelaides fault, they were told to take them.

huh? where did you get that from? according to the article Zoo_Boy they were not TOLD to take them.....they ASKED.

Just saw kevin evans on today tonight, so in 2009 they should be here, they are planning a huge bamboo plantation to feed them with (i am assuming it will be at monarto). they will get a new exhbit and i belive it wil occupy the bear and giraffe exhbit areas (just my guess)

me neither, i am sure anyone would jump at the oppurtunity to keep them with government help - private, government or board run(adelaide).

Where will the Giant pandas live when they arrive at the Zoo?
The Giant pandas will be housed in a brand new facility to be specifically designed for their particular physical, social and behavioural requirements. The exhibit will be built on the site currently occupied by the pelican and cassowary exhibits.

Where will Adelaide Zoo source the large quantities of bamboo required to feed two adult Giant panda?
Adelaide Zoo has an extensive 14 hectare browse plantation at Bolivar, 20 minutes drive from Adelaide Zoo, that will be used to grow up to five species of bamboo in addition to browse for our extensive animal collection. Bamboo grows exceptionally well in Adelaide, with our cold wet winters and warm summers suiting the growing conditions of many species. While the plantation matures, we have sourced supplementary bamboo locations around Adelaide.

thanks torie, the zoo already owns a large section of bolivair (where adelaides umm, sewerage plant is) that they grow gum in,

Personally that is the worst place for it i beleive, the pelican exhbit looks great, its grown well, the cassowary needs a new home though (IMO), but in between those exhbits is the arrot block, a large amount of native bird aviaries.
But that will back onto existing facilities for south east asian exhibits.
its also a place of main traffic, so i would have thought if they put them somewhere were less people go it will encourage people to explore the zoo.
