that is 8 Sumatran Tigers at Dreamworld isn't it? I know this has been mentioned elsewhere but I can't find it. How many zoos want sumatrans?

That indeed is a total of 8 at Dreamworld. Have to go through the ASMP to see the list.

Sumatran tigers in NZ
Old 12-06-2008

There are also 2 sumatran male cubs in Hamilton -- originally from either Auckland or Wellington ( Auckland I think -- but could be mistaken )
These are brother and sister .

Wellington Zoo website says that they have 2 Sumatran tigers , a mother and son .

Auckland has a breeding pair , which we know that the female is probably pregnant

It took a while to find info on Orana Parks tigers from the wensite , but it appears that there are 2 4 year old males ( brothers )

From what I can put together..

Bengals:

Dreamworld - 5 males and 1 female. (Mohan the father born USA in 1994) and four cubs born in 1998) plus Kato from Bullens)

Australia Zoo - 5 total. The two original males (from Bullens I think) and the three latest cubs from Mogo

National Zoo - 1 male - original Dreamworld USA born in 1994.

Darwin - 3 in total. A brother and sister (Bullens?) and another female.

Cairns - 1 female on loan from Perth - originally from Mogo (and private collection before that). Thelma?

Mogo - 3 in total. I think there is a brother and sister (Rosco and Kitty) and the sister of the Cairns female (Louise?). I assume that She and Rosco are the parents of the Australia Zoo cubs??

Zoodoo in tassie - two from Bullens.

Not sure what Steve has at Darling Downs and their ancestry.

It would be intersting to know what other private collections are out there...

Sumartrans:

Adelaide - Tigerboy died a couple of weeks ago, leaving one male and two females (Tuan and Assiqua are currently being mated).

Melbourne - 2:2

Sydney - 0:2?

Dubbo - 2:1 ? Not sure which ones were transferred from Sydney after recent litter?

Perth - 3 in total? (including Hari from Cairns)

Australia Zoo - 6 in total (3:3?)

Dreamworld - 8 in total

National Zoo - 1:0

Mogo - 1:1

Feel free to correct...

It is an exciting time, with many zoos implementing breeding programs. Seems to have got a kick-start in the last two years.

Of course that is not even considering NZ who are also part of the region.

Hope I'm not splitting hairs here but:-

While it is convenient to refer to the non-Sumatran tigers in the region as "Bengals", it's important to acknowledge that most are a mixture of races. The main source of tigers for Australian zoos and circuses in the days of free and easy importation were from U.S. zoos and Singapore animal dealers. Many of the Singapore animals were from Malaya. Our generic tigers probably also have a dash of Siberian and maybe even Sumatran in them (courtesy of the U.S.)

Incidentally, the most beautiful tiger I have ever seen was a large male Siberian at Adelaide Zoo some years ago. He was "retired" to Mogo to make way for Sumatrans at Adelaide, but developed cancer in the jaw and had to be euthanised.

Ara,

Point taken.

I was just using the term 'Bengal' as that is generally used to describe the generics in the country. I've been to Australia Zoo, Dreamworld, Mogo, Darwin and Canberra and they all use that term, (although you will never see it in the census data)

While not technically correct, I guess it is just easier from a general public point of view, not having to explain the finer points.

Thanks

Tim
