Perth Orangutans.
Old 25-04-2007

I've just been discussing Chester Zoo's orangutans on another thread. Their male Sumatran male Puloh was born at Perth. Can anyone tell me if his mother 'Puan' is still living at Perth? She was still alive a few years ago and must hold some sort of longevity record in your region.

Hsing Hsing is/was the male Sumatran orang which came from Singapore Zoo to Perth, to be their breeding male after the previous one, Atjeh, died. (Atjeh was Puloh's father). Atjeh and Puan had a very good breeding record together with several young reared. I think their offspring's names all start with 'PU' Puloh had a brother, Puntjak, who lived(still does?) at Adelaide Zoo.

I believe Puloh's father, Atjeh, died in an accident where the climbing equipment in his enclosure collapsed on him, can anyone verify that?

Sorry, I meant Pusung, not Puntjak- but I think he's another brother of both Puntjak and Puloh(Chester) or at least related...

I got an answer by asking the same question on the Perth/Australian section of the Forum. Look there for the details(they're both still alive)

isn't karta the female who has a bad history of infanticide?

if so that would lead to the assumption adelaide are not breeding their orangs at the moment. neither can taronga (who have no pure sumatran female to breed to their male) or auckland (who have only hybrids and borneans for phase-out).

that just leaves perth and to a lesser extent melbourne as the only two zoos breeding the apes within the breeding program (though that doesn't discount the importance of the other zoos "holding" animals at present)..

yeah i remember you mentioning that - they it was planned for them to get orangs from melbourne. which puzzled me since melbourne has just a pair of sumatran orangs, and they have a young offspring. clearly it is neither benificial nor desireable for melbourne to have done that. maybe they wanted adelaide to take their hybrids, but then, why would adelaide want two more non-breeders?
