taronga zoo visit 1/7/08
Old 01-07-2008

I had a day at taronga today. It was looking good. i think they are cleaning up to get ready for the pope and his crew in a couple of weeks.
The big avairy was closed and so was the wetlands one in the asian trail. The old sunbear exhibit, under the asian trail is getting changed into a temporary home for the red pandas. i don't know why, but that was what I was told by staff.
There seems to be a new construction site down past the road that goes past the tahr mountain and meerkats. there were a few workers down there but i couldn't see what they were doing.
One of the elephant staff said they are waiting for confirmation of a pregnancy on the elephant that has just finished being artificially inseminated so fingers crossed, there may be a second pregnant elephant.
Mary, the old gibbon is no longer in her figtree but my guess this because of the work being done next door on the new bull elephant enclosure.
That area of the zoo is a dead zone at the moment with no penguins in there old enclosure, and the two old avairies that have been empty for years, plus the jungle cats area is closed while they fix up the exhibit for tassie devils.
Still no work is being done on the new enclosure for the cassowarries.
Both leopard seals are in together, and looking to be in good health. One of them was swimming back and forth under the bridge.
I will post some photos later.

The old sun bear redevelopment is because the current red pandas will be another enclosure for tassie devils, the jungle cats development will not be able to house our full population, so some tassies are going to the current red panda's and the red panda's will move to the old sun bear. The new construction in the area you brought up is going to be the new home of roar and snore, the zoo's sleep over program, permi-tents will be established and the program will be run from there instead of the ed centre

Thanks for the reply zooworker.
I think the roar and snore area is the nicest view in the zoo.
How far off are tassie devils from going on display?

It's gonna be great.
From conversations with aus mammals keepers i know that the enclosures themselves are ready, they are just waiting to see if the plantings will become escape routes so the tassie's remain off display for a while, however as you may have noticed the old tassie devel enclosure had a facelift and a young male tassie called murray moved in.

Question
Old 02-07-2008

The large paddock that is under the giraffes was empty yesterday. There was no food in the hanging baskets and it looked like the whole exhibit had been cleaned out. What's going on, is it being cleaned out waiting for the arrival of another indian rhino female?

I got a chance to go to Taronga while i was in Sydney for WYD but because it's my first time since the Olympics it seemed like a totally new place. The two things that i reaqlly wanted to see were GSO and Wild Asia and I was impressed by Wild Asia but underwhelmed by GSO. Maybe i'm too picky but it seemed so barren and fake (although the penguins swimming over the top of me was cool and not many seals can beat leopard seals.)

Everyone in this place is very fast to pick up info. Mind you the link to the newspaper article would have told a lot. Well work has continued round the clock with the new female. Extensive bites on this female and the fact she's underweight by long way means thats shes fighting an up hill battle. But Sabine was in much the same condition when she arrived so we shall see.

Visited Taronga on Thursday!
The Giraffes were off display but due to thier size it was hard not to notice them at the rear off a off display are behind the barn... Wollemi Aviary, Rainforest Aviarys and Platypus Pools closed due to maintainence, Sign read to come back later in the year! Elephant Breeding Facility still far off completion slabs and leveling well underway. Leopard Seals off display a large Fur Seal was having some fun. Seal Education Show was fairly good but very short!Female Meerkats have gone to Adelaide Zoo theres plans on getting some new females for future breeding... Janton was collecting his usual enrichment toys and taking them up to his nest female was not on exhibit... Wild Asia exhibits with water viewing areas was very murky and dirty, from recent weather. What happened to the Andean Condor in QBE Bird Show, I remember seeing him when he had just started a year or two ago what happened? Most of the old aviarys, gibbon enclousure, asian cats, and seals pools all empty no hurry to get them ready for anyone I think... The Seal Pools, Old Seal Theatre and Old Penguin Exhibit really annoy me, overgrown with plants, full of rubbish and debris, need to be cleaned out and have some info panels around it or a cover it over with giant tarps, very dead zone! Dholes exhibit re-vamped with attractive red woodchips and plants, animals off-display, display signs saying there arriving soon? Penguins were all out of view or off-display, I couldnt find any not that they are easily viewed in there huge exhibit which they barely use... Bongo looks very board sitting at back off his exhibit he needs some Females, what happened with the herd? No signs of any new Greater One-Horned Rhino anyone know when its due to arrive, Dora must be so bored at Western Plains I saw his enclousure was recently expanded on the website... Not much to say really was quite disappointed not the best time to visit!
