Great Apes
Old 09-09-2008

Hi All

I've just joined this site today. I live in the UK and I have visited most zoos in the UK and Germany and also some other European ones and also Moscow. I collect info about the apes I see such as name, gender, date and place of birth, zoo history, parents - basically the info you woud normally find on a zoo taxon sheet. Some zoos are happy to email me their taxon sheets but other are not. Does anyone know if such taxon sheets are available anywhere on the net ?

Welcome to Zoobeat. As you may have seen already, quite a few of us are a bit barmy about one species of ape or another (or even about hornbills).

Hi from another everso slightly obsessed orangutan fan. I have a copy of the 2004 European stud book which I try to keep up to date via the internet, zoo library etc. My passion for orangutans, and therefore zoos, began when I came across Bulu, formerly of London Zoo and then Paignton Zoo, but now, sadly, no longer with us.

I got the stud book from a very kind contact! We've put it on a data base. It's too big to email but I'd be happy to send you a CD (which will work if you have Microsoft Access no earlier than 2000) if you PM me your address.

Sumatran orangutans allways spring to mind being the more active of the two, I don't have a favourite between the two.

Both give me hours of entertainment watching them and there different behaviours.

I don't have a favourite sub species but I do like some individuals even more than others.

Yeah, that is kind of like me with elephants some-individuals look just magnificent, or their character is very appealing, or in a lot of cases the baby is very popular

I prefer Sumartran because it is more widely spread in Australian zoos (I think there is only one Borneon in Australia and for that matter only one hybrid) and I don't know if it is a proven fact but i heard somewhere that Sumartran males are more willing to be kept with their offspring then borneons.

I believe there are still hybrids present at both Melbourne & Sydney Zoos.

Adult male Sumatrans are more tolerant of offspring and can usually be kept in a family group with females & young. Adult Bornean males are much less safe with babies and will sometimes kill them.

Sumatran orangs in captivity are generally slimmer and a lot more active than Borneans. Being less prone to obesity and having more social tendencies, they do make a better zoo exhibit than the Bornean.
