Hello from Florida
Old 25-02-2008

Hi,

I am Jesse Golden and I work with Okapi at White Oak Conservation Center in Yulee, FL. While I am still rather young, I have visited over 70 zoos in North America and maintain a large collection of maps and exhibit designs of zoos/aquariums. I have grown up always wanting to be a zookeeper and now I am living my dream. If anyone has an interest in okapi/hoofstock or zoo design I would be happy to be involved in any discussions.

Hi there Okapikpr welcome to the forum

Is it possible for the general public to visit Yulee? You have a great collection of animals and and I for one would love to see them. There's a lot of information on the website but I can't see anything about visiting.

Hi Okapikpr, welcome aboard, looking forward to your news from Yulee, you seem to have the largest herd of okapi outside of Africa there along with another of my favourites the giant eland.

Welcome on the forum. Hope you can fill us in on the comings and goings at White Oak. It is a great facility with lots of good breeding programmes. Sadly, the website is not that user friendly and much deserved news items not always find their way down there.

I personally am very interested in both the okapi Epulu project for which White Oak has been the prime motivator, and secondly my love of rhinos (platonically speaking ... ). I appreciate if you could give us more info on both the Indians and the southern blacks over there.

Wow, thanks for all the greetings. As for White Oak i'll make a thread to give you all the details of his private facility that is open to donors and guests of the Gilman foundation. However, I am able to give tours to professionals in the zoo field...so if any of you are keepers and find yourself in Florida, let me know.

I have hundreds of exhibit plans, most from american zoos. let me know if you are interested in what zoos and I'll see what I can do. But here is a brief summary of my collection:

Miami Metrozoo - Rhythym of the Tropics
National Zoo
Bronx Zoo
Columbus Zoo
San Diego Zoo
Woodland Park Zoo
Los Angeles Zoo
Sedgwick County Zoo
Cheyenne Mountain Zoo
Cincinnati Zoo
And More...

Have you heard of zoolex.org? Its the best zoo design website.

@okapikpr: do you have many exhibit plans from the Woodland Park Zoo? They are currently planning a brand new, $3 million Humboldt penguin enclosure for 2009, but they also have numerous award-winning exhibit designs from the past that I'd be intrigued to see.

And Mark is right, most of us here know all about the fantastic zoolex website.
