I am a new member to the forum.
I do research and am glad I found this.
My research is to start a breading program and to work very closely with all existing Zoos in Australia on endanger Africa game. My research also includes the effect climate changes have on the feasibility of traditional farming in Australia and if farming with Africa game as a replacement of the current farming practice will be achievable and the impact it may have on the Australia bush.
I would like to know what the strategy and/or policy of zoo management are in regard to these private owned breading stations/farms. If anybody can help me, I would appreciate any assistance.
My plan is to bread these animals from specimens received from the Zoos and return or replace older animal with younger ones. The game will run free in a similar environment as where they originate from.
I want to start off with my research to see which species are available in Zoos across Australia and what programs are in place.
If a list of Africa game are obtainable I would like to received one or if anyone can direct me to somebody that are able and willing to help.
I found that Zoos are not willing to reveal any information in this regard and struggle to get more information.

If zoos in Australia are not willing to reveal any information about their African species, how do you expect to get animals for your "research"?

Wont import laws in Australia that restrict the import of ungulates make it very difficut to create large scale farming operations?

yes I often have this problem when I visit zoos and, as I enter, ask what species of animals they have for me to see. They always reply with, "sorry that's classified, we can't tell you what's in the cages"

I can only think of two safe (By safe i mean isn't in danger of becoming extinct in Australian collections) antelope species and they are Eland and Blackbuck. Blackbuck doesn't come from Afirca but the same sort of environment.

It would seem that you have a bit of a cyclic problem - you want to work closely with zoos, and they have information and animals that you want. But you say that the zoos won't give you the information.

Do you expect to base your research on second-hand information from a public forum, rather than using facts about the species provided by the zoos themselves?

In all seriousness, if I was trying to undertake some research on zoo populations, I would be working harder to get factual information directly from the zoos. I'm not sure what else you expect from this forum on this topic?

Just for me to be clear. Are you suggesting, that you want Australian zoos to supply you with the founder stock.To commercially farm African game for the purpose of human consumption?

You have no chance what so ever. It will not happen!!
