I think you are right Jimmy, they also planned a tank in there for American crocodile too.

Bristol Zoo used to be a privately run society- full title 'the Bristol, Clifton & West of England Zoological Society' or something similar, and as far as I know it still is. Its certainly nothing to do with Bristol City Council.

I had supposed the plans for their new 'Conservation Park' had been submitted long ago. I'm sure both the start of actual building work and completion dates will be put back several times while this huge amount of money is raised.

The Society is a registered charity. I just looked it up on the Charities Commission database - it is Main Charity 1104986. They only made a small surplus in 2005, but they made £0.75 million in 2006 (on a turnover of just under £6 million).
The zoo's website says they have been given a grant of £1.5 million by the Regional Development Agency and they may be eligible for EU funding too, perhaps for job creation. I doubt if they will be eligible for any other major public funding.

Thanks Gentle Lemur I thought tey were a registered charity, this means they will not be granted any major public spending but can apply for grants. Chester have done a similar thing to try and raise some money for their "Natural Vision" plans

Bristol will go cap in hand to the European Union, charitable trusts, commercial organisations, regional development agencies etc, but coming up with that sort of funding is going to be tough. Look at the problems Edinburgh has had.

North America seems to have a limitless supply of philanthropists ready to dip into their pockets for zoo projects. Sadly it's not the case here.

The plans for this look to have changed quite a bit since my last visit, but it all still seems very promising if it comes off.

I think cat-man might be on about the original Bristol site.
They don't have room in the original zoo, but they will do in the new one, although no one has actually mentioned them getting elephants.
Wish they would though, they could give them a really state of the art enclosure in the space on the new site.
