Hey i thought some of you guys may be able to give a bit more information on the other okapi in uk zoo's Chester - 1.1 - Male is called Mbuti and is the offspring from the female at bristol zoo (which they tried horse whispering with him so that they could attend his hooves without using a cruch). The female is called Stuma and came from strugart. Bristol - 1.1 - There male died after Mbuti was born and so londons male was sent to them. London - 1.1 - The male is called dicky that was at Chester for a while. Woburn safari park built an exhibit for them but before they could obtain any animals, a decision was made to not allow any zoo without okapis to introduce them as they had a few poor years with okapi and the capitive population.
You forgot Marwell- they have five or six, and have bred several. I don't have details to hand, but London's original female was the first calf to be born at Marwell- she was handraised and sent to ZSL aged about two. Name was something like Emma/Ella/Eva(??). This could still be the same female still at ZSL and now paired with Dicky. Or the current female could be her daughter(Jemima?) as she has bred successfully at ZSL and reared her calves.
I knew there was one more zoo but could not remeber which one it was. Wow 5 or 6, i didn't think any collection in the UK and more than two. Thanks for the info.
Chester is getting another okapi later this year. I think that it's a male and it will begoing in the area around the Current Okapi house, but will they build a new enclosure? The current one doen't seem capable of holding three animals. I think marwell has 3.3 okapi.
The new Okapi at Chester should be going into the Cattle House. Since the east side has just been refurbished for the pigs, he would have to go where the buffalo are. There were plans to move the buffalo, but last October a decision had not been reached. The only spare paddocks would be the one between the offshow Philippine Spotted Deer and the proposed Addax exhibit, or somewhere in West Zoo. The buffalo have been downsized to a small group to facilitate a move. When this will take place is anyone's guess.
Does anyone know anything about the Bristol Okapi - I went last week and there was only one - the male. His name was up but his name was the only name (can't remember it though!!).
That doesn't sound good- there should be a pair. The male came from London- I can't remember his name either. The female was (I think) called Xantia. She is/was the other of Mbuti,the calf born at Bristol- and now at Chester. His father wasn't the current male but the previous one.

Hornbill if you are writing about the buffalo group, I would think so. The only reason breeding has been controlled is because it is easier to transfer 4 buffalo than 14. Incidentally the Congo Buffalo arrived in 1984 and the first calf was born in 1985, and then breeding stopped and there was talk of returning them to Whipsnade. The original male went to a private collection in Cumbria, and the herd increased with the arrival of a new male. Whipsnade's buffalo went to Woburn, and were replaced by bluebells. Chester would like 6.6 Okapi, that will take some doing. Stuma is too young to breed yet.
When i did the zoo keeper for the day last year, they said they wouldn't hold more than two okapi i the current house if possible. The layout inside has six seperate pens but they like to open this up and give them more room at night. Does anyone know then what happened to the female okapi at bristol zoo then?
Regarding the okapi at Bristol, I have just ran a search and a new female should be arriving soon. She is called Lodja and is from a zoo in France (Zoo of Vincennes). Bristol Okapi Rubani Can you tell me anymore about 'Rubani' I knew that the latest male came from London but didn't know he was born at Bristol. Do you know who his parents were? I'm presuming from his age that he is from the original Bristol line which goes back(unbroken?) to the 1960's. The last of this line I saw at Bristol was the male 'Mikeno' but I don't think he ever bred and died a few years ago. Certainly neither of the latest breeding pair at Bristol were from this line but it could now be reinstated with 'Rubani' Also, I think Rotterdam's female 'Lisala' is a Bristol-bred animal? Is the new female Okapi destined for Bristol and born at Rotterdam, any relation to her? If so, the new Bristol pairing could be(distantly) related to each other. Its very bad news the female 'Xantia' has died at Bristol- any reason known for the death? She hadn't been there an awfully long time- though at least she did breed while there.

Okay, and thanks, that's really interesting information. Even though the current Bristol male Rubani was born at Basel, the old Bristol line WILL be resurrected again there if the female Lodja is now sent to Bristol, as Lisala (her mother) is from that line too- definately so if her father was Josef. So again they will be breeding from their original line. I was sad to hear about the death of Xantia at Bristol- I was there only a couple of months before her death and she still looked okay then.
That's a lot of animals for one location, probably more than any other European zoo has. I guess if they breed succesfully they can reach their target in time- plus building new enclosures? I think Okapi are wonderful creatures- possibly THE most beautiful mammal. They have everything, comparative rarity, grace and beauty too. I can watch them for ages.......
The Bristol Zoo annual report gives some details of the demise of their female Okapi. For now, Marwell has 3.3, London 1.1, Chester 1.1 and Bristol 1.0 All UK collections with Okapi list their animals on www.isis.org
grantsmb asked me if there still live okapi's that are born in Bristol Zoo. And yes, there is one. Mbuti (M) born on 05-09-'04, he is seventh line from of the original line (mazanga+Bakeda).
