Monkey Heights opened in 2005 to replace the old monkey house. Last time I looked, there were a family of 4 Diana Monkeys, 5 (?) male Abyssinian Colobus Monkeys, a family of King Colobus Monkeys, a large group of breeding Sulawesi Crested Macaques, Prevost's squirrels, large tree shrew, lesser mouse deer,a family of 5 Emperor Tamarins, southern pudu .......... It was a million pound in-house project. For more detailed information try paigntonzoo.org

Gigit- I presume 'Damisi' is still at Paignton as I've heard nothing more? Time is dragging on rather...

Yes, I'm afraid so. I don't know anything more about the reason. They didn't plan on him being by himself for so long - poor chap
I guess Chessington will be opening at Easter so you might be able to discover something from that end.

Looks a fine new attraction to me, innovative and imaginative a swamp setting for crocs and assorted snaky reps. The only downside to me is the choice of crocs: I applaud the Cuban crocs C. rhombifer, but the Nile and saltwater crocs are lame ducks to me. I would rather prefer the African C. cataphractus or dwarfs O. tetraspis and an endangered Asian croc taxon -either Philippine crocs C. mindorensis or Siamese C. siamensis.

I really think the European TAG for reptiles should be more actively promoting the maintaince of more endangered croc taxa and their projected breeding. Just look at the ISIS numbers and one can see the potential there (oh ...., I feel another thread coming on ..... ).

I do, its political. I've been asked not to say anything at present and won't until I know something positive.. It won't do him any real harm to be alone for a while(not too long though...)

It's huge - you can't miss it if you go uphill past the baboons, the giant tortoises and the Vets centre. It's where the old monkey house used to be - at the edge of the zoo where the stores etc are.

odds and ends of news
Old 28-02-2008

Bison: Summer, the old female, died of old age in December. Her son, Jasper, will be joining a Bison farm shortly to do some breeding.

Allens Swamp Monkeys: the new male, rather then the usual two females, was in the enclosure today. Hopefully they'll all be mixed soon.

Damisi: he was being crate trained in the show den this morning so they must be planning to move him at some point.

Bison- sorry to hear abou the old female, I've seen her many times. I guess when the calf leaves that's the end of American Bison at Paignton- a pity really..

Swamp monkeys- good news they haven't given up with these.

Damisi- My guess is Chessington will still be taking him...

Good news about the monkeys but sad about the bison. Is it me or are they becoming rarer in zoos nowadays
