Already heard that about the new enclosures near the eles... moving leopards to the lion enclosure sounds a bit surprising, as its an open-topped enclosoure, but its probably not impossible.

Where did you hear about the Rusty Spotted Cats? That would be unbelievably brilliant!!!! I still miss the Sand Cats at Twycross, but that would certainly fill the void IMO.

Badly damaged foot and tail - not genetic but also not good for display.

I saw Hari years ago when he was at South Lakes - found it highly amusing to hear the park owner talking about the "fittest and wildest tigers in Europe", only to see one of Hari's former keepers stroking him through the wire fencing late afternoon when most visitors had gone home!

Twycross zoo Elephants.

I am delighted to learn that NorJahan, the Asian Elephant has scanned positive for pregnancy following A1 treatment. Her baby is due around August 09. Scans on the other cows showed that Tara is not quite mature enough yet, Tonzi has a reproductive defect a will be taken off the breeding register and plans are in place to start training Mimbu (the matriarch) to accept A1 later this year. Good news!. I was there earlier this week and was impressed with the relatively new Francois Langur . They have a good, comprehensive primate collection but I do wish that there was some order in where each is exhibited. Asian species are side by side with African and American making study difficult. There are four groups of Howler monkeyat different points around the zoo.

Yes it is... I'd still rather see them keep a bull but this is the next best thing.

NorJahan is younger than the two females which have already bred and provided the pregnancy develops okay, this will be her first calf(fingers crossed).

It's a shame Tonzi can't breed though

I'd hesitate from suggesting it might be because she hasn't been bred for a while... Could be, but equally could be some other reason. I don't know.

I think that's good practice: in the houses where there are only wire barriers between the species, wouldn't it be stressful to house closely related species side by side? The langur house has spectacled, Javan, purple-faced & Phayre's (if the old lady is still with us) in adjacent enclosures, but at least they have wooden screens between them.

Anyone which knows something about the Grey Gibbon Hylobates muelleri that Twycross still has (according to ISIS)?

I recall seing this species in several European zoos in the 1980s and up until the early 1990s but got quite suprised when I had a quick look at ISIS. It is almost gone from European collections now. I guess the numbers never have been large but I still thought that around a dozen or so still remained in Europe.

I have been told that they kept 2 males up until only a few years ago? my friend told me that the other male was of the muelleri race, is that true? anyone knows what subspecies the remaning male belongs to? the age of the remaning animal?

Very happy for any info at all about this species in Twycross.

The Twycross Muller's Gibbon is the only one at the zoo. His name is Smiler and is housed in the Gibbon Nursery. He does have another Gibbon with him for company but not sure on the species. I believe it's a female. I will try and have a look next time I'm there working.
