The Gallery

Although this is primarily a forum/ discussion site (and a very good one at that), the photo gallery is also rapidly becoming an indispensible resource to those undertaking any form of zoo research.

The use of the photos for this purpose is much more difficult, however, it posters do not add sufficient information to the title or description.

I know this is really picky but could I propose that all photos posts at least have basic information such as: common name of animal (eg sumatran tiger) or enclosure (eg lion terraces); name of zoo (eg London Zoo); date (at least the year the photo was taken).

This will enable more effective searching of what is bound to become a huge library of photos as time goes by (already is pretty big).

This also enables the historical value of each picture.

Apologies for the over-expression of my 'classification gene'!!

I wholeheartedly agree. Could everyone who has ever posted photos please edit them with all of the pertinent information? Some photos could be from anywhere.

I think i've provided the basic information on my photos (tell me if i'm wrong and i'll correct it) but I don't put the date on, as it appears in the photo information underneath the picture...

But yes, the already improved gallery could be even better with some more info on the pics.

Thanks guys appreciate you indulging me.....

CZJimmy is right re: date is automatically added but this only works if you took the photo with a digital camera with the correct date set. For older scanned pictures, this will be shown as the date of the scan not the date the photo was originally taken.....

You have a very good point there, the basic information with all of the photos would be a big bonus in years to come.

Photos taken with digital cameras should automatically have the date embedded in the EXIF information (metadata) that is part of the image itself - the gallery software can read and extract this information.

However, if you have scans of non-digital photos, the EXIF information (if it exists at all) will contain the date the image was scanned, not when it was taken (unless you manually edited the metadata) ... in this case you should try and make an effort to include the date information in your post - if possible!

I use a Firefox add-on called FxIF. It seems to work on the medium sized images in the Gallery, but that may depend on the post-processing of the image.

Also, a little suggestion..

Could we try to rate each other's photos more often, as it is sometimes good to see what we think of each others work...

Hi guys,

I've uploaded lots of pics in the Gallery in the recent past, many of them belong to Budapest Zoo. I always write short descriptions to the photos (f.e. cultural and historical aspects, too). Unfortunately I missed to indicate the dating on them, but the bulk of these pics taken just a few weeks/months ago ... but, If I have more time, I think I'll add the dating on them ...
