These two bulls mentioned above are full brothers- (Baringo 1 x Rukwa) so there's no point them having both. However I'm not sure why Kingo(born 1983) was returned from Paignton while Port Lympne still had his brother Baringo 2 (born 1992)- is the 16 years old Baringo 2 suspect for breeding perhaps?

Slightly off thread here, i see Port Lympne have 2 Grevy's zebra stallions on the African safari, where did they come from?

The 26.9.08 ISIS report shows only 1.1 black rhinos at Howlett's - anyone know if this is an error or has one female moved/died ?

I have been going all through this thread trying to identify all the current PL black rhinos - males appear to be Kingo , Quinto , Manyara , Zambesi and Moduli - am I right ? Females - Vuyu , Etna , Jaga , Arusha , Nakuru , Ruaha , Solio and Rukwa - also some others which I cannot work out and would appreciate help with .

Also; Nyasa(F) Laikipia(F) Limpopo(M) Rufiji (F) Kivu(F) Salome(F).
Plus some others born since 2003.
However I'm not sure if these are all still there(or at Howletts) or if any of them died/were exported.

Limpopo and Laikipia were released in Africa a few years back. I think Salome is now a howletts, sure ive heard her name mentioned there.

Does anyone know of any updates with the Howletts rhinos?

In August 2008, the 3 rhinos in Howletts were -according to the sign on the enclosure - male Vungu and females Rufiji and Salome. All three were together in the large grass paddock.

I checked the Howlett's rhino web-cam this afternoon and saw 3 animals - so ISIS is not correct showing 1.1 .
I also picked up the names of a further 2 rhinos at Port Lympne, Grurneti latest son of Etna and a female Darnara of similar age - I wonder if these are the 2 offspring of male Mwaniki , now deceased .

Do you know how many calves the ex ZSL male 'Jos' fathered at PL before he died?

Not certain if there were any - I have reasonable records up to 2002 when the excellent annual 'Help' report always gave details of changes in the rhino herd . Since then I am not certain . I know Jos arrived in March 2002 but do not know when he died . I don't have details of births since then either .

I will try to put together what I know and put it on a post soon .

'Jos' didn't last very long at PL. I believe he fathered at least one calf but maybe only the one.

The following adult females black rhinos were at Port Lympne , not certain if any have died in recent years though -

Rukwa - wild-caught , born ca. 1971 , now retired from breeding

Arusha - born 1983 to Naivasha and Baringo

Nakuru - born 1989 to Rukwa and Bwana Mkubwa

Vuyu - born S. Africa about 1991 , arrived 1995

Etna - born about 1992 Dvur Kralove , arrived 1995

Ruaha - born 1996 to Rukwa and Parky

Jaga - born Dvur Kralove about 1993 , arrived 1999

Solio - born 2001 to Rukwa and Addo

A lot of males have arrived and died over the years including I think - Bwana Mkubwa , Jasper , Addo , Jos and Mwaniki .

I think that is all the incoming bulls, apart from Quinto and their original breeding male 'Baringo 1' who was born at Dublin Zoo(first called 'Ringo' as it was the 60's) the only one ever born there. Ringo/Baringo was descended through his father 'Ronald' from the original Bristol pair 'Willie' & 'Stephanie' -so a number of PL's rhinos are related to them too, as is the recent calf at paignton zoo.

Port Lympne/Howletts update.

At port Lympne there are now two mature bulls again. Their own 'Kingo' arrived back from Paignton several months ago and is currently kept with two females (sorry, can't remember which ones but obviously the unrelated ones.)

'Quinto' arrived from Chester just a few weeks ago, is still very nervous of his new surroundings and is not exhibiting any territorial behaviour yet, but will be put with females when he has settled down. There are several for him to breed with.

At Howletts there are still 1.2 rhinos, there has been mating but so far no pregnancy.

Kingo will probably have been introduced to Nakuru (Vuyu) (no relation sire or dam)and Jaga (Dvur born and bred). Other possible candidates are: Vuyu, Etna and Salome.

Quinto could be introduced to Arusha (shares sire with Kingo) and Vuyu (Nakuru).
Both Ruaha and Nyasa share (some) genes with Kingo and are therefore unlikely candidates for breeding to him.

Cows with attendant calves: Etna (Grumeti) and Ruaha (Monduli). Quite possibly even Vuyu (Damara), allthough I suppose that one will have been weaned off her by now.

Cows now of an suitable age for first breeding are Salome (b. 2000) and Nyasa (b.2003).

So, now you know (almost)!
