Polar bears
Old 03-07-2008

Yesterday I was at the "grand opening" of Arctica, the new polar exhibit of Rotterdam Zoo. The exhibit is not finished yet but it wil within a few months. Yesterday however the opening took place. Only one animal already moved to the new exhibit: polar bear Tania. She came from an old enclosure at Amsterdam Zoo into a brand new, very large one. She couldn't believe her eyes when she jumped into the pool. Afterwards we saw her exploring her new exhibit. What a space to take a walk! She climbed unto a hill and looked at het neighbours the bisons. After so many years in the most terrible exhibit of the Netherlands (imho) she now finally can live a happy life. Later she will get two room mates from Dierenrijk, a male and a female.

Other animals for Arctica are polar foxes and hares.

When the exhibit is finished I will add some photos.

Is it possible for 'normal' visitors to see the polar exhibit now? And is the new giraffe house open yet?

I am in holland this summer, and am weighing up whether to revisit Blijdorp having been there earlier in the year, or whether instead to go to other places (I may end up in the divorce court if I visit a zoo every day, as I would like to. Maybe just three days out of four).

Not yet, but about 3 weeks, yes.
(At the beginning of the Rotterdam school holidays)

Cool!

I hope water quality improves then... Another expensive underwater view of plankton soup.

The waterfilter isn't functioning yet, but when it will it should all clear up. Hopefully it will
