Camilla also has the famous Frankfurt bloodline (Epulu x Safari) in her too (of course what Okapi doesnt nowadays). Its good to see that she can be valuable to the EEP. In the SSP, she would be very lowly ranked.

Is Fons (Camilla's grandfather) considered of the Antwerp Bloodline? I understand he was born at Antwerp, but his mother Paprika is the only "survivor" to successfully outbreed from the Paris line and his father Aburo (born in Rotterdam) is of a Rotterdam x Basel cross.

Old 12-07-2008

Have just read through this thread . Good to read of successful birth at Marwell , looking forward to their second and also a birth at London .

Are the latest editions of EEP , SSP or International Okapi Studbooks accessable anywhere on the WEB ? I have managed to find very few studbooks when searching .

There may not be a 2nd birth at Marwell- they aren't sure if something has gone wrong..

ZSL female Elilah(born Marwell, sister of Zukisa) should have given birth by now I think?

I was wondering about that, whether she had given birth or not.

Hopefully everything is ok because they were preparing for this months ago

When I went about 3 weeks ago the pair were still outside together as normal. As this will be her third(?) calf) I would hope things will go as smoothly as previously. Of course I don't expect they'd announce it immediately anyway...

Bristol Zoo okapis
Old 16-07-2008

I know it is sad but give me a Studbook or Annual report and I can be amused for ages - must be to do with me being an Accountant !

Bristol zoo was my first and probably responsible for me being a life-long zoo enthusiast . At a very early age I suspect I had an elephant ride on Rosie .

I remember the first pair of okapis at Bristol and have probably seen nearly all on show since as well as seeing a large group at Hollywood Towers housed in simple stables and yards .

I have often wondered what happened to all the okapis bred by Bristol, I did once contact Antwerp asking for a copy of the studbook but got no reply . I suspected it might be found somewhere in the internet .

After some analysis I have now found that between 1963 and 1995 there were 28 live births in the Bristol group . Of these 10 lived less than 1 year , 5 between 1 and 5 years , 5 between 6 and 12 years , the remaining 8 more than 12 years - female Bilota who went to London was the longest lived at 19 .

Only 4 were exported - females Bilota , Kasindi to Antwerp , Lisala to Rotterdam ( she died in 2007 )and male Madolo to Paris . They all bred - 22 offspring in all - spreading the Bristol genes through the population .

Another 8 of the 28 born produced offspring at Bristol .

As well as the original pair Bakeda and Mazanga who produced 6 offspring , Josef who was born in Frankfurt and arrived in 1967 sired 10 offspring . Male Mazanga sired another 5 calves with 3 females related to him but all with sire Josef . Two other males , Kibali and Sura both born in Rotterdam spent time at Bristol but only Babs sired by Kibali survived to adulthood .

Me too. I remember 'Rosie' but not sure I ever had a ride on her.

When the first pair of Okapi were imported for Bristol, I believe the original female died in transit so 'Bakeda' was actually a replacement but the first female to reach the zoo.

If you trace through all this Okapi data you'll find that the 2006 Bristol born male calf M'buti, who is now at Chester, is 7th generation Bristol bred in an unbroken line from the original pair Bakeda & Mazanga. The latest female at Bristol 'Lodja' is also a 6th generation from that same unbroken line. In both cases these animals derive from one of the animals exported from Bristol, rather than the ones that stayed at the zoo, where the original line died out.
