The Future For Swedish and Danish zoos...
Old 23-11-2007

So, i've heard a lot of rumours of the future plans for the zoos in Sweden and Denmark. Here they are.

Sweden!!

Kolmården Zoo will build their new Marine World next year. Their dolphinarium and their seal and penguin exhibits will be renovated and themed to a californian beach when it's done in April 2008.

Also, they wants to have hyenas, pandas, buffalos, hippos and polar bears.

Borås Zoo doesn't have any special future plans. Although,i would like to see a big tropical house in Borås monkey house. They only have chameleons and pythons there so you know what i mean.

Parken Zoo have armadillos in their tropical house now, and these will be next years big thing (that's what they think)

Denmark!!

Denmarks future plans are much better and i can start with Copenhagen Zoo.
Their new elephant house and their new red panda exhibit will be finished next year.

After that, they will rebuild their polar bear exhibit and later, maybe they will have sea lions where the lions are today.

Also, they wanna have chimpanzees and lions where their childrens zoo are today. Their savannah exhibit and their hippo house is located there too so that's why..

Odense Zoo have already confirmed some of their future plans.

In 2009, they will build a new savannah with giraffes, zebras, ostriches, sitatungas, flamingos, pelicans, crocodiles, crowned cranes and more.

In 2011, Fishbone Bay will open and here you will find new, huge exhibits for sea lions and sea otters. You will also find a 5-D Cinema here.

Odense Zoo also wanna have elephants, rhinos and snow leopards in a big indian temple in their Asian exhibit.

Givskud Zoo (Denmark's answer of Kolmården), also have a very bright future plan. They wanna have bonobos, indian rhinos, tigers, orangutans, wild dogs, tapirs, cheetahs, penguins, prairie dogs, brown bears, crocodiles, jaguars and wooly monkeys.

Naestved Zoo (a small zoo in Denmark), will have white lions next year.

That's all of the future plans for the moment. Thank's for reading.

Special thanks to Toddy

Sadly, no. They might import them from USA, since they have good contacts in Sea World Florida and San Diego from trading som king penguins.

Ok, i hoop they succeed. Rotterdam was said to get a male from.. i guess it was seatle for about a year now, but nothing has arrived
The only mating male is the one in lisbon. Chuluugi (the male that is currently in antwerpen) was brought to europe as an orphan and does not seem to know how to mate... So new import would be wonderfull news.

They will proably not bring in new ones as the exhibit, though large, needs a renovation. The indian rhinos are way far out in the future, the current Asia theme will be a South American theme, so they rhinos will, if they ever come, get a brand new exhibit.

These came from Skansen-Akvariet. Apperently they were eating quail in the Arizona desert exhibit and for that reason got evicted. They will now be replaced with springhares.

Armadillos are a lot more "blodthirsty" than you might think. I once saw two of the trying to steal a baby sloth from it's mother. They were sharing their exhibit in Frankfurt Zoos nocturnal house, and the female sloth was down on the ground, doing her weekly business. It was a long tug of war game, but eventually, the female managed to save her baby from the armadillo, and escape to the treetops.

How about Furuvik outside Gävle?

A friend of mine worked there in September 07 and told me that they are intrested in building a new primate section, which means that they will demolish their "Hedenhös land".

They keep orangs and W. African chimps already and my dear freind told me that they were looking into getting some sort of gorilla as well as Pygmy chimp. Possibly also getting some more orangs as well. But from what I understood its as always a matter of money, the zoo is being runned by private persons now and the zoo is not as popular now as it used to be. They needs some sponsors if they are going to be able to go forward with these plans. I have not heard anything since September when my friend worked there.

I used to be very updated about what was going on in most of the Swedish zoos in the 1970s and early 1980s but as I have not lived in Sweden for a very long time aim not very updated whats going on in Swedish zoos anymore.

Some update about whats going on at Furuvik would be intresting, if they would get gorillas and Pygmy chimps it would defenitely be among the most intresting zoos in Scandinavia.

Thanks,

Are you sure this is going to happen? Last I heard it was just on the planning stages.
