Malayan tapirs in Europe
Old 10-03-2008

To trace the comings and goings of the secretive Malayan tapirs in Europe, I am starting a new thread.

After years of neglect, it seems interest in and the breeding of Malayan tapirs is once again on the rise. Several new zoos have started with Malayan tapirs, including ZooParc Overloon in Holland.

Some recent news snippets:
ZooParc Overloon (1.0 elderly kept, ca. 20 years old).
1.0 sub-adult from Dortmund Zoo to ZooParc Overloon
0.1 b. 1/2007 from Artis Zoo, Amsterdam to ZooParc Overloon

Zoo Dresden, Germany
0.1 Nesia has died at the ripe old age of 38
sadly the end of keeping of Malayan tapirs here.

Feel free to add on!

1. Nico: born +/- 1997 Berlin Zoo.
2. Signora: Parents are Bullie + Wandaloe.

Rotterdam Zoo:

1.0 James

0.1 Wandaloe: born +/- 1987. She can have no children anymore.

0.1 Ganesha: born 14-02-2005 Antwerp Zoo. Mother is Signora
(so Ganesha is a grand-daughter of Wandaloe).

What do you know that our Belgian zoofriend Marc did not? If you no longer list Indira as being at Zoo Antwerpen ... Where is she now?
Plus: any news on Nico and Signora breeding and a new pregnancy at Zoo Antwerpen?

Thanks jelle, that is a very kind offer! I had visited Aya when she was pregnant for her first calf and was great to see the ultra sounds they had done!

So what's the history of the Malayan Tapirs at Twycross, both past and present?

Hi, not to sure if the following information is 100% correct but the following are the Malayans I know about in the UK.

Twycross Zoo: Current Malayan Tapirs:
F: Madge.
M: Colin. Colin arrived from Heidelberg Zoo, Germany in April 2007 (possibly born at Artis Zoo?).
Don't know where Madge came from, possibly a German Zoo?

The Malayans at the RSCC in Kent are on loan from Howletts - a male and female I think, going by the names of Kingut and Malacca. Found these photos taken in 2007:
RSCC 2007-05-05 - a photoset on Flickr

Also the Malayans at Port Lympne: the recent baby, a male, has been called Copasih according to their website. I know PL had a young female, Tengui, born in 2006 - don't know if she is still there? Statement from PL: The baby is one of six Malayan tapirs housed at Port Lympne. Grandpa Daeng and the baby’s grandmother, Lidana, born in 1987 at Port Lympne, gave birth to Lidaeng(the baby's mother) in 1998. Lidana has also given birth to two other female and three male tapirs during her 20 year life

Other Malayans that I'm aware of are the ones at Edinburgh: Ka (from Dortmund), Sayang (from London) and their youngster Vasan (still at the zoo?).

And I think Marwell Zoo's last Malayan, a male called Lodhran, died in 2005.

What's the situation with London's Tapirs? (ISIS lists 1.1)

Are they breeding age and a good pedigree?

Their female is called Gertrude and is 3 1/2 and was bred in Belfast! Im not 100% on the details of their male but I know he is a good bit older and has been there for a good few years!
