On January 15th, the zoo announced they acquired (0.2) bighorn sheep named Amelia and Camille in December which are now on exhibit.

On January 18th, the zoo announced that a (1.0) slender-tailed meerkat named Kruger passed away at age 12 due to heart failure caused by a cardiac disease.

Woodland park zoo is transferring a female Malayan Tapir to a Canadian AZA accredited facility this year. This is an SSP recommendation, so I am thinking it is likely Calgary. This is not confirmed. The Tapir in question is Sempurna (0.1) born 2020 (Bintang x Ulan). Will have to wait and see.

On January 30th, the zoo announced that their President and CEO of 20 years, Dr. Clément Lanthier, announced his intention to retire at the end of 2024.

Also on January 30th, the zoo announced they will be transferring a (1.0) Amur tiger named Samkha to another unspecified AZA facility in the week of February 4th.

On February 1st, the zoo announced that starting on February 20th, the Penguin Plunge area will be closed for 12 weeks so the facility can enhance the mechanical systems. The king penguins and some gentoo penguins will still have access to the outdoor exhibit.

On February 8th, the zoo announced that they acquired a (0.1) Bactrian camel named Marshie from the Edmonton Valley Zoo in Alberta.

On February 9th, the zoo announced they acquired (1.1) spur-winged lapwings named Chief and Matle which are now on display in the Rainforest Aviary.

On February 21st, the zoo announced they moved (1.1) whooping cranes Arthur and Mera from the Wilder Institute in Alberta to their new exhibit inside the Wild Canada area.

On February 29th, the zoo announced that their (1.0) Indian peafowl named Norman passed away at age 17 due to advanced degenerative changes in its legs and spine.

On April 5th, the zoo announced they acquired a (0.1) Malayan tapir named Sempurna from the Woodland Park Zoo in Washington which is now at the Archibald Biodiversity Centre completing quarantine.

Also on April 5th, the zoo announced they acquired (0.2) Turkmenian markhors named Cy and Phoenix from the Colombus Zoo & Aquarium in Ohio.

I hope there are baby tapirs that contribute to the NA population. I would like them to return to Toronto again.

 

The Zoo Granby announced that their male mandrill, Kouma will be leaving for the Calgary Zoo to form a new group here in Calgary with a female already present in Calgary. Kouma had his last checkup before he go. He is maybe 5 years old. Zoo Granby do not want aggression between the male mandrill.

Also, the female markhor are 3 years old. The females are here following a breeding recommendation with 2-year-old male Cliff, markhors. Cliff was living with an older female Sproing.

 

Last year, Calgary zoo 40 greater sage-grouse, 26 head-started burrowing owls 432 northern leopard frog tadpoles in the BC waters. The zoo had 17 Vancouver Island marmot pups born and released 13 of them from the litter. They had released a total of 100 burrowing owls birth since the program.

On April 24th, the zoo announced that the Jihad Shibley Rocky Mountain Aviary is temporarily closed for great grey owl nesting season.

On April 25th, the zoo announced that a (1.0) mandrill named Yusufu passed away at age 20 after recovering from surgery that removed a large section of its small intestine.

On April 27th, the zoo announced that their (0.1) cougar named Freya passed away at age 15 in March due to progressive chronic kidney disease and other age-related issues.
